The Astros exercised their option on Cecil Cooper today extending his contract one year for the 2010 season. This came as a big surprise to everyone as the Astros have underperformed this season. The Astros could have waited farther into the season to see how they progress.
Ed Wade said part of the reasoning for the extension was because Cooper has experience building a team and helping young players. Drayton McLane hopes the extension eliminates any confusion and lack of focus. I doubt a manager extension can help a team focus, but I’m hoping and praying. I would feel a lot better if management waited for signs of life before extending.
On a side note, it seemed as though Valverde just needed a day of rest for his injury. He was back for a save opportunity last night, but his command was not there and gave up a 2 run homerun in the top of the 9th and the Astros could not rally and tie it up. Roy O’s great performance was wasted but at least we saw vintage Roy.
