The Astros had a well-timed day off on Tuesday and has responded with wins Wednesday and Thursday against the Pirates. Mike Hampton got the start. I thought his first start went really well. His pitches had plenty of movement. Sometimes his 2-seamer looked like a slider. He allowed 3 runs in his first start, but it was still a good start other than the four walks. His second start was a surprise to many including myself. He allowed 4 hits, 8 strikeouts, and 1 walk in 6 innings. If there are more games like this, I will never second guess Ed Wade and Drayton again, especially after how hot Keppinger has started.
Unfortunately, I was unable to see Thursday’s series finale, except for the last few innings, because of school. The finale put Russ Ortiz against Jeff Karstens. Both starters didn’t last the required 5 innings for a win. I wish I could see why Russ was taken out so early. It seems he had a rough first but settled down; however, that is just looking at the box score. He only allowed 5 hits. Pence and Berkman had homers, while Jeff Keppinger extended his hit streak to 6 games. Keppinger is hitting .467 this season.
Because the Astros are in Houston, they are forced to have big injuries throughout the season. This season is no different. Doug Brocail (rotator cuff) and Brian Moehler (knee) are both on the 15 day DL hopefully to be back late April and mid May respectively. Kaz is out til at least April 18 with a back problem. This would be huge if it wasn’t for Bourne’s better than expected start. Jose Valverde didn’t come in for a save in the Pirates series finale because of a sore back. Hopefully it is just sore and not hurt.
The Astros start a series against the Cinci Reds tomorrow. The Astros have the best winning percentage against the Reds than any other team. Roy O has owned them since his career started.
