Gear Up For Astros Baseball

Mother’s Day Sweep

The Astros haven’t lost on Mother’s Day since 1999, so I’m sure the confidence was high when they brought the brooms out against the Padres last Sunday. Whenever you think of Padres games, you think of 2-0 games or 2-1 extra inning games, but that was not the case yesterday. The Stros brought the big bats as they completed the sweep with a 12-5 victory as Pudge, Lee, and Tejada went deep. Roy finally got some run support in his games giving him his first win of the season.

The Astros start a series against the Colorado Rockies Tuesday. Paulino, who is replacing Russ Ortiz on the rotation will start against Ubaldo Jimenez, who is coming off a good start against the SF Giants. He is 2-4. His major problem is giving up walks. He has given up 20 walks so far this season in 6 starts. Mike Hampton returns to Coors field in the second game, where he faces the familiar face of Jason Marquis. Marquis is 9-6 with a 5.12 ERA all time against the Astros. The finale features “Magic” Wandy Rodriguez and Jason Hammel. Wandy has had the best season of any Astros pitcher so far having quality starts in all but one start and still not allowing one homerun yet this season. Hammel has started 3 games so far this season and has lasted 5 innings in just one of them. In his last start he lasted 4.1 innings after giving up 8 hits and 6 earned runs. The Astros need to stay hot after the Padres sweep in order to keep climbing up the NL Central.

On a side note, the Astros have a bracket going write now where you vote for the best moments in the first 10 seasons at Minute Maid Park. Right now, you can vote for either Lance Berkman’s grand slam in the NLCS and Biggio’s Jersey Retirement. My favorite moment was snubbed from contention. My favorite moment was when Jose Valverde took one in the face and stayed in the game to get his save.
